HAILOULA IN ESSAOUIRA

Hilulah is a religious ceremony held by the Jews on the twenty-sixth day of September every year, on the occasion of the anniversary of the death of Rabbi Haim Pinto.

Whenever this ceremony is mentioned, the sight of those crowds of Jews gathered around the tomb of Rabbi Chaim, buried in Essaouira, comes to mind.

The city of coexistence and tolerance, where Jews lived side by side with Muslims for long periods facing a common destiny.

This ceremony is an occasion to renew the bonds of brotherhood and love between Moroccan Jews and the Muslims of Medina.
And the Jews of the world who come to Essaouira among themselves, and it is an opportunity that the Jewish pilgrims seize to express their attachment and loyalty to Morocco, the king and the people. And the extent of their attachment to their rabbi, Haim Pinto, whom they consider a pole of the Jews who are jealous of their religion..

In the episode, there are testimonies confirming the depth of the ties that were and still are between Jews and Muslims in Essaouira, and others that show the regret shown by those who left Morocco to live in other countries.

Including certificates:

Rabbi David Pinto, one of the great-grandsons of Rabbi Haim Pinto.

Albert Knavu

Albert Elmaleh

And Simon Hatchwell returning to the homeland to settle, after an emigration that lasted fifty years.

It also includes the interrogations of some Moroccan Muslims who lived with Jews in Essaouira.
